WELCOME! I would like to thank you for taking the time to visit the Texas Navy Association and explore our website. I am Admiral Scott Powell the 2025 President of the Texas Navy Association (also known as the TNA).

The missoin of the association is to preserve and promote the little known but gallant history of the 1835-1846 Texas Navy.


The TNA funds museum exhibits, educational videos, history teacher education, Texas history curricula and educational events, along with events commemorating the Texas Navy and its role in Texas History. 


The TNA membership all come together with the like-minded interest in historical Research,   and promotion of the love of Texas History with focus on the Texas Navy.  If you have an interest in our mission, then reach out and join us or make a donation now or send a check to 6341 Stewart Rd., #102, Galveston, Texas 77551 that helps make a difference to support the historic and gallant Texas Navy.


We are a Non-Profit Corporation, Chartered in the State of Texas and administered by an elected Board of Directors, providing oversight to the matrix structure of our operating Committees. The TNA is a Volunteer organization. The TNA is funded thru the collection o f Member annual Dues, Donations and Grants. Your membership and donations are the primary funding source for funding our museum exhibits, educational videos, history teacher education, Texas history curricula, and events commemorating the Texas Navy and Texas History.

Author an essay about Commodore Edwin Ward Moore

Contest Rules

Deadlines:

Deadline for the Texas Navy Association 7th grade Essay is Friday, May 16, 2025. Entries may be downloaded to the Squadron Committee Chair near the applicant. See list.*

This is the month before the essay is due to the State Committee for judging. This provides the Squadron Committee time to judge the essays and send their winner to the TNA Association State Education Committee for final judging of a State winner. The State Education Committee Chair must receive the Squadron’s winning essay no later than June 20, 2025. The State contest winner will be selected from winning essays submitted by each of the Squadrons. Essays will be judged by the TNA State Education Committee and the winner will be announced on Friday, July 25, 2025.

Formatting:

Typed essays are to be double-spaced on 8½” by 11″ paper, using “Times New Roman” font, size 12. Top and bottom page margins are to be one inch, with side margins being 1.25 inches. Essays must be submitted in English.

Requirements:

Bibliography

A minimum of four (4) references is needed – no more than two (2) may be internet references. Research references should be listed on a separate page, but not counted as part of the essay length. Included in the bibliography should be the name of the author; title of the book; newspaper; article; city of publication; publisher and date of publication. Facts cited and research references will be checked by the committee. Spelling, punctuation, grammar, and neatness are a consideration in judging. The essay should be original, interesting, and well organized. The most important aspect of the essay should be historical accuracy.

THE TEXAS NAVY by Alex Dienst (2007) Originally published in 1909 as THE NAVY OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS


Word Count

Word count should be no more than 825 words. Any paper over this word count will be

automatically disqualified. Word count does not include the Bibliography. Names such as Admiral

Chester Nimitz or places such as Battle of Campeche are counted as one word.

Cover page should include:

  • Student’s name
  • Title of the essay
  • Name of school, address, and city
  • Texas Navy Association
  • Sponsoring Squadron name and city
  • Squadron contact and telephone number
  • Parent’s name, phone number and mailing address

Awards:

The local Squadron awards a $100 gift card as a prize for its winning essay. The winner and his or her parents are asked to attend a Squadron luncheon and meeting to read the winning paper to the Squadron. The parent’s contact information is important in case an emergency arises, and the student is unable to attend. This will ensure that the Squadron knows where to send the gift card and certificate.

The State winner receives a $500 gift card and certificate and is asked to read his or her winning essay at the Fall TNA Board of Directors meeting on November 8, 2025. The winner and his or her parents will be provided with a room at the hotel where the meeting takes place, provided that the student lives 50 miles or more from the hotel. The hotel room will be provided on the Friday before the Saturday Board of Directors meeting. Three seats will be provided at lunch for the student and two guests. The Texas Navy is not responsible for other expenses incurred to attend the BOD meeting to receive his or her award.

Winning an essay contest will look good on any future resume, whether it be for college or employment.

55 pts.-HISTORICAL ACCURACY

10 pts.-CLARITY OF ESSAY, Is grammar clear? Is spelling and punctuation, correct?

10 pts.-ORGANIZATION-Is the essay original, interesting, well organized

    The opening of this Texas Maritime Museum's Texas exhibit will include some special historical presentations. Come and celebrate the accomplishments of the Texas Navy during the early days of the Republic.

    The first members meeting in 2025 of the squadron is open to TNS Zavala Squadron and Texas Navy Association members; as well as others interested in learning more. An opportunity to join the squadron at a discounted charter member price will be provided.

    A BBQ lunch catered by Stevie Lew's will be offered for those who register. The meeting will include voting on the updated bylaws, approving an initial budget, and volunteering for several interim squadron positions through the end of 2025. Following the business meeting, attendees may view the new Texas Navy exhibit in the museum that opens on April 24th.

    Nautical items available in the flea market include: Fishing, Sailing, Power Boating, Windsurfing, Scuba, New & Used Parts, Tools, Motors, Rods, Reels, Sails, Nautical Art, New & Used Boats, Dinghies, & Kayaks Buy, Sell, or Trade.
