TNS ZAVALA Squadron
The TNS ZAVALA Squadron is now underway having received our official notice of affiliation from the TEXAS NAVY ASSOCIATION dated 07 October 2023.
The TNS Zavala Squadron was named after the TNS Zavala of the 2nd Texas Navy. It was the first steam warship to ever serve in battle for either the Texas Navy or the US Navy.
In 2022 several initial Squadron organizational meetings were held at the Texas Maritime Museum, 1202 Navigation Circle, Rockport, TX which is currently serving as our official Home Port. The Squadron name and the By Laws were approved at these meetings.
The TNS Zavala Squadron (also designated by the Texas Navy as the Corpus Christi Squadron) is actively recruiting new members in our area which includes the Coastal Bend all the way south to Boca Chica. All currently Commissioned Admirals in the Texas Navy and all personnel interested in becoming members at the Governor appointed Admiral or Commander, Lieutenant (young adult/student) or Associate member levels are encouraged to contact us immediately to get signed up and on our contact list for the upcoming TNS Zavala Squadron meetings.
My role has been as "facilitator" in organizing the Corpus Christi Squadron. I am now serving as the Interim Squadron Commander until an election can be held. However, I am also the appointed TNS Zavala Squadron Texas Navy Association Board Representative. Admiral Michelle Haas is also now serving as our elected Squadron Executive Officer. Upon convening our next Squadron meeting we will be seeking volunteers to serve in the following Squadron officer positions:
Squadron Commander - TBD (need elected volunteer)
Executive Officer - ADM Michelle Haas (elected)
Financial Officer - TBD (need elected volunteer)
Sergeant-At-Arms - TBD (need elected volunteer)
IT Officer - TBD (Appointed)
Squadron, Texas Navy Association Board Representative - ADM Tom Hauser (Appointed)
Texas History Liaison Officer - TBD (need elected volunteer)
Squadron Membership Chairman - TBD (Appointed)
Squadron Chaplain - TBD (Appointed)
For the TNS Zavala Squadron to be successful and grow in membership we need local area residents (Corpus Christi/Rockport/Fulton) to get involved and take ownership of this Squadron. Several years ago we moved from our home San Marcos to our new home in El Campo, TX. We have previously been a member of both the San Antonio and Austin Squadrons. However, I'm not an area local - just a temporary facilitator that needs your assistance. We need local leadership who know the people, the communities, the local history, and can lead the way in assisting the TNS Zavala Squadron to become a relevant historical organization in the Corpus Christi/Coastal Bend area.
